The coupon,  in offline marketing, is a voucher or paper that can be exchanged for a financial discount or other value - addition when purchasing a product. Customarily, coupons are issued by manufacturers of customer packaged goods or by retailers, to be used in retail stores as a part of sales promotions.

For online retailers,  a coupon code is provided.  To redeem these coupons, users enter the coupon code during the checkout stage.  Most eCommerce sites are equipped with a box in the initial checkout page  labeled coupon code, promotional code, promotion code, discount code,  promo code, shopping code, voucher code or contract code.

Online coupons offer advantage to both retailers and consumers.  Consumers do not need to carry the coupons with them - and it is relatively nor do they generally have to work very hard to find the product in the online store.  Much of the time, when a user finds an online coupon code, they will also find a direct product link.  Retailers benefit from lower distribution costs and the security of the codes being built into their eCommerce solution (inability of users to forge or use coupon codes for unintended purposes.)  A good online promotion can find itself spreading by word of moth online far faster than possible offline. Price conscious consumers can generally locate promotion codes and compare prices with little effort.
